Understanding The Role

Counselling is a type of talking therapy. It is a way for people to talk about their problems and feelings in a safe, private place. As a counsellor, you do not give advice or tell people what to do. Instead, you help them understand their own thoughts so they can find their own way forward.

When you train to be a counsellor, you are learning how to listen properly and how to support people without judging them. It takes time and practice to learn how to do this safely and professionally.

You provide a quiet space where a client can talk be it in person or in an online session or by phone. Your job is to listen closely and help them see their problems more clearly.

No. You do not need all the answers. You just need to be able to sit with someone while they figure things out for themselves.

You usually start with a Level 2 course to learn the basics. Then you move to Level 3, and finally Level 4. Once you finish Level 4 and have done enough practice hours, you can work as a counsellor.

Yes. All counsellors follow a set of rules called an ethical framework. This keeps both you and your clients safe.

Three Key Parts of Your Training

Learning to Listen

You will learn how to listen to more than just words. You will notice things like tone of voice and body language to really understand how someone feels.

Staying Safe and Fair

You will learn about the professional rules of counselling. This includes confidentiality and making sure you treat everyone with respect.

Understanding Yourself

To help others, you need to understand your own feelings first. A big part of the course is looking at your own life and how you react to things.

Active Listening

You will learn how to listen to more than just words. This involves paying close attention to a person’s tone of voice and their body language. You will practice how to give someone your full attention without interrupting or thinking about what you are going to say next.

Building Empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand how someone else feels from their point of view. In your training, you will learn how to show a client that you truly understand their emotions. This helps create a sense of trust and safety, which is the foundation of all counselling work.

Managing Professional Boundaries

It is important to be supportive while keeping a professional distance. You will learn how to be warm and caring without getting too involved in a client’s personal life. These boundaries are essential because they keep both you and the person you are helping safe.
